SOUND COLLAGES
Here are some examples of sound collages I've created. I enjoy the process of scouring over my record collection in order to cut and paste samples together, reworking them into a new and somewhat cohesive whole. After the sounds have been culled and curated the hope is that they can speak to a new theme or message. Please have a listen.
Jazz Euphorium Theme for CKUT 90.3fm - by John McGill
This is a sound collage I put together for CKUT 90.3fm in Montreal. It is currently in use as one of the themes of the Jazz Euphorium program. It takes a collection of sounds from my record collection (everyone from Sun Ra to Steve Martin) and reworks them, cutting and pasting around the jazz theme.
Morning After Theme for CKUT 90.3fm - by John McGill
This is another collage I put together for CKUT 90.3fm in Montreal. It has been used as one of the themes of the Morning After program. It takes a collection of sounds culled and curated from various records referencing the morning and creates a new narrative, cutting and pasting around the morning theme.
Sound of the City fundraising spot for CIUT 89.5fm - by John McGill
This is a sound collage I put together for CIUT 89.5fm in Toronto. Although it was never aired, I enjoyed making it, digging through records for appropriate samples. Like the others, it takes cuts of sounds and arranges them around the city theme.
Radio Reverie: An Auditory Ode - by John McGill
Here is a sound collage I put together as an auditory ode to radio. I cut and pasted samples I found off records, arranging them to produce this audio essay and articulate my message through sound.
Fundraising drive spot for CKUT 90.3fm - by John McGill
This is a spot I did for one of fundraising drives at CKUT 90.3fm. The theme of the fundraiser was 'off the map' so I tried to play with that through the sounds I selected. I also made a video collage to accompany this sound collage. Feel free to check it out in the video section of my website.
